2012 Black Sheep Designs Studio Workshops

Please print out the registration form to sign up for these classes. You may mail it or fax it (see form).

We are excited to announce the first workshop series to be held in our new workshop space at 4996 Delaware Turnpike, Rensselaerville, New York. It is right next door to our home and studio and has lots of room for large felting projects!
We have invited several fabulous felt artists from around the globe to offer advanced level classes for experienced feltmakers. (This does not have to mean expert, but some felting experience is necessary given the complexity of the classes).
Hope you can join us this summer for some fabulous feltmaking experiences in our beautiful historic hamlet.

This workshop is for making fashionable and creative tops and dresses. It is for felters who enjoy playing with textures using different materials to create structure and layers.
Colour contrasting will play a big role.

We will work with silk fabrics, merino, wensleydale long hair, knitting yarns and mohair  and we will make use of different felting techniques to create surface textures.
You will be making pieces of art and unique garments that come into full expression when worn. These will be days full of surprises.

Sharon Costello - Felt in Nature

Sharon Costello - Felt in Nature
The natural environment is an endless source of inspiration for art. Join felt artist, Sharon Costello in exploring forms, textures and color found in nature and interpreting these in felted compositions. Bring close-up photographs of fungus, tree bark, leaves, shells, insect wings, and other imagery from nature. Learn to look at them with a new “eye” … distilling the essence of these images and translating them into either two or three dimensional felt “studies.” In the process, learn a range of methods for creating varied surface and textural effects as well as sculptural forms in felt.

Marjolein Dallinga - Sculptural Felt
This 5 day workshop will deepen the consciousness about experiences learned from sculpting with felt and other fibers.
We explore different sculptural form ideas to become more aware of how and why we want to use this medium.
Focus on basics like color, design, and conceptions of an artwork.
In this workshop students will be challenged to play with their own designs using sculptural felting techniques, deepening their awareness of the creative process with an accent on the journey and not the end result. This is an experimental discovery workshop.
At the end of each day we will discuss creations to heighten awareness of color and design choices.
An exhibition of all work will complete the course.
