B 1. Dye Techniques for hand felted Fine Merino Scarves with Chad Alice Hagen
Learn to make delicious fine wool scarves using only your hands!! And then delve into the mysteries of some of the newest surface design techniques in resist dyeing! We will spend three days on three different aspects of this dye method, reverse resist, direct dye paint and paper and wood transfer resist. The results will be stunning! Come join Chad Alice Hagen for one of her increasingly rare workshops as she moves into semi-retirement from teaching.

B 2. Osman Style Felt Rugs with Theresa May O’Brien Sorry, Class Full! Wait list only.
The Osman technique, named for the detailed Turkish embroidery during the Osman period, is a layout method for laminated felt and fabric. Theresa has traveled and studied extensively with Turkish feltmaker, Mehmet Girgic- who developed this process for creating rugs, wall hangings, bags, etc. Learn techniques for creating detailed rug designs with dyed wool rovings, add a layer of linen, muslin or silk for texture and strength and then layer about 6" of base wool for a strong, thick rug backing. Use traditional Turkish felting methods including special felting mats, hand and foot rolling and "kicking" the felt! It’s a work-out, but well worth the effort!

B 3. Outrageous Ottomans with Nicole Chazaud Telaar Make a piece of felt furniture you can take home with you!. In this three day session each student will design and make their own ottoman. On day one students design their fabrics, usually coordinates for the sides and top and a third for decoration, trim, flowers and other embellishment (students must chose their background fiber colors in advance so that they can be dyed to match your interior). The fiber is laid out, shrinkage calculated, design concepts discussed. Bring ideas and concepts, photos of your favorite object, living room or space that the piece will live in once home. On day two students will create their felt fabrics, using traditional felting techniques and a straw mat. Flower making and hand shaping will be covered at the end of the day. On day three we will assemble. Felts are cut to size, sewn together, ottoman cores are glued, feet/casters are screwed on, foam glued to core, fabric cover slipped on, stretched into place, stapled and trimmed! Please note that because of the custom dyeing, hardware and extensive supplies list involved in this workshop, the materials fee is $177.50.

B 4. Complex Bag Designs with Inge Bauer Sorry, Class Full! Wait list only.
Those who came to Fling 2005 remember the wonderful felt bags made under the tutelage of German felt maker Inge Bauer. She has agreed to return as a teacher for 2007 for another bag workshop. Learn how to create multi-layered bags with inside and outside compartments, handles, closures and of course, beautiful colors and designs.

B 5. Victorian Inspired Felt, Part 2 with Jeanette Sendler and Pat Bennett (6 day session; continued from session A 5)
Jeanette is a trained costume designer, feltmaker and installation artist. For many years she has designed and constructed garments for the stage. Pat is a sculptor trained in metal work and glass, who teaches welding at Snow Farm. The two will work as a team to help you creat felt fashions and sculptural pieces inspired by the Victorian Era.
Jeanette will guide you through the 19th Century looking at historical details. Dress fabrics which look soft and floating were often supported by heavy metal constructions to keep the drapery afloat. We will undertake a journey into the hidden undercover of Victorian dressing habits and associated living quarters. You may want to concentrate on garments, e.g., crinolines , bustles , and hats...or interiors such as screens, light shades and other gadgets. What all items have in common is the sculptural aspect and the idea of combining the soft and hard, felt and metal.
We will work with fine merino wool incorporating silks, viscose, bamboo and other exotic fibers to create high quality material.

Participants will be asked to bring their sewing kit,old button box, odd bits of lace, net, frills, satin band, hooks and eyes, which have been waiting a long time for the moment to be brought back to life. The course will give you also a chance to rediscover some long forgotten old fashioned stitches, such as darning and eyelet stitches. Sewing machines optional.

B 6. Felt Garment Construction, Part 2 : Jacket Construction with Daryl Lancaster (6 day session; continued from session A 6) Sorry, Class Full! Wait list only.
