A 1. Shape Resist Scarves with Chad Hagen Sorry, Class Full! Wait list only.
Three days, three different scarves and ways to thermal set and dye merino wool scarves. Students will learn a fast hands on method for laying out fine wool scarves and then apply fabulous and exciting resist techniques of binding, capping, wrapping and stitching to those scarves changing the surface texture, shape and color. Class will use both 17 and 21 micron merino wools. A dye kitchen will be set up and students will enjoy the experience of dyeing their own scarves. Expect to make 3 scarves if not a few more once the excitement sets in.

A 2. Color and Design for Interiors with Nicole Chazaud Telaar Just One Spot Left!
Nicole’s mastery of color and design is obvious from her highly successful product line of felted home furnishings, sold under her business name -"Festive Fibers". Fine tune your own understanding of color theory and development of surface design in this intensive theory and hands on tutorial. This class is the opportunity to find out how it all works! Students learn to use the color wheel, how to make "color combinations", why some colors work better than others, what is value and hue? What the heck is a throw color? We will work on paper and with fiber swatches throughout the first day creating endless glorious color ideas. Next we will explore design motifs taking inspiration from favorite items or images you have brought with you, from nature and more. And finally we will get a chance to put it all together into felt designs that sing! Create several pieces of flat felt appropriate for throw pillows, wall pieces or as samples for larger home furnishings.

A 3. Fantastic Felt Vests with Daryl Lancaster Daryl is an accomplished handweaver and seamstress who has taught sewing to hand weavers for years, helping them to design and construct garments from handmade fabrics. Now she turns her talents to felt makers, helping us to fine tune our sewing skills to make the most of our exquisite felted fabrics. In this three day workshop we will take previously made felt fabric, unsuccessful felt projects, unused scraps ... and bring them together into a one-of-a-kind patchwork vest. Using Daryl’s basic vest pattern custom fitted to you, we’ll assemble a vest from felted scraps, experiments, cut up old work and any other fabrics and trim you would like to incorporate. This class will include basic fitting and sewing techniques.

A 4. Glass Adornments for Felt with Gail Crosman Moore
Gail offered an inspiring class for Fling participants in 2005 and is back by popular demand! Learn how to create beautiful glass lamp work beads to compliment your felted garments, bags, felt jewelry and adornments. This would be a great compliment to the felt bag class with Inge Bauer. Given the number of lamp work torches, this class is limited to the first 8 enrollees.

A 5. Collars, Cuffs and Crinolines:Victorian Inspired Felt, Part 1 with Jeanette Sendler and Pat Bennet (6 day session)
Jeanette is a trained costume designer, feltmaker and installation artist. For many years she has designed and constructed garments for the stage. Pat is a sculptor trained in metal work and glass, who teaches welding at Snow Farm. The two will work as a team to help you creat felt fashions and sculptural pieces inspired by the Victorian Era.
Jeanette will guide you through the 19th Century looking at historical details. Dress fabrics which look soft and floating were often supported by heavy metal constructions to keep the drapery afloat. We will undertake a journey into the hidden undercover of Victorian dressing habits and associated living quarters. You may want to concentrate on garments, e.g., crinolines , bustles , and hats...or interiors such as screens, light shades and other gadgets. What all items have in common is the sculptural aspect and the idea of combining the soft and hard, felt and metal.
We will work with fine merino wool incorporating silks, viscose, bamboo and other exotic fibers to create high quality material.

Participants will be asked to bring their sewing kit,old button box, odd bits of lace, net, frills, satin band, hooks and eyes, which have been waiting a long time for the moment to be brought back to life. The course will give you also a chance to rediscover some long forgotten old fashioned stitches, such as darning and eyelet stitches. Sewing machines optional.

A 6. Felt Garment Construction, Part 1: Felt Fabric for Jackets with Inge Bauer (and Daryl Lancaster) (6 day session) Sorry, Class Full! Wait list only.
A terrific class for those who consider themselves "sewing challenged
" Create your own, lightweight felt fabric and learn to sew a simple unstructured jacket. The jacket is custom fit, guaranteed to look great, feel good and teach you the basics of sewing.
During the first evening (Aug 25th) students will meet with both Inge and Daryl for design discussion and custom pattern fitting. On the first three days students will design and create beautiful felt yardage working with master feltmaker Inge Bauer. During the second session students will work with master hand weaver and seamstress, Daryl Lancaster to cut, sew and finish their custom fit jacket. After this class we think you will look at sewing as part of the creative process rather than something to avoid!
